Woman arrested after allegedly locking up five-year-old nephew for 6 months in Lagos

  A woman has been arrested for allegedly locking up and assaulting her nephew, 5, for 6 months.   Sharon Williams, 43, had 5-year-old Micheal Ibiyome living with her in Gberigbe, Ikorodu, Lagos, and allegedly subjected him to abuse a number of times.   She also allegedly denied him an education, food, and, love, and freedom to move around.   In the latest development, the suspect allegedly used a cutlass to inflict injuries on the back of Ibiyome’s head and a neighbour reported the matter to the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs, which transferred the case to the state Ministry of Youths, Sports and Social Development,  Punch  reports.   The suspect was arrested at her residence around 8pm on Wednesday, July 14.     The Lagos State Deputy Coordinator for Child Protection, Lateef Akinborode, said it took about five hours for the suspect to surrender herself for arrest after security agencies tried to gain access i...

EFCC arrests soldier and 26 others for alleged internet fraud in Lekki (photos)

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal Office, have arrested a serving military personnel, Lance Corporal Ajayi Kayode and 26 others for alleged internet fraud in the Lekki axis of Lagos State.   A statement released by the antigraft agency says Kayode, with service number NAF18/34732, was arrested in his military attire during an early morning raid at 6B, Fatai Idowu Arobike, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, on Saturday, August 15, 2020, following intelligence received from concerned members of the public about his alleged involvement in criminal activities.     He was arrested alongside Kalu Emmanue; Hassan Sunday; Odinaka David Okem; Victor Ochiabuito; Christopher Prince; Victor Ologhu; Alex Aka; Miracle Onyekwere; Habeeb Ayomide; Olakunle Ajeigbu, Rasheed Olanrewaju and Salam Hakeem.   Others are: Adeniran Nurudeen; Opeyemi Ojo Chris; Derrick Moris; Shehu Oluoti; Fuad Akinbayo; Babatunde Idowu; Uzo Igwe Nathaniel; Debowale Adedoyi...

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has fired back at his critics following the controversy that trailed his condolence message on the death of Buruji Kashamu, a former senator and factional leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State.   In his controversial condolence message, the former President said the late Kashamu who was wanted in the United States of America for alleged drug offences, was able to escape justice but could not evade death.   Obasanjo's comment attracted criticism from some notable Nigerians including former Governors of Ekiti and Lagos states, Peter Ayodele Fayose and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.    However in an interview with Premium Times,  the former President said it is okay for people to mourn every death but that the living including himself, must draw the right lessons from the lives of those who have died.   He said;    “When I was growing up, in our community, when anyone known with bad charact...

Entire Spanish village is quarantined after 12-year-old girl tests positive for Coronavirus

The entire population of a Spanish village with about 200 residents has been put into quarantine today after a 12-year-old girl tested positive for Coronavirus.   Fernando Resino Carrillo, the mayor of Sotillo de las Palomas explained the decision, saying the vast majority of the 200 residents fall into the risk category because of their age and he is worried that the virus might spread.   He has ordered everyone to stay at home for at least ten days after a girl contracted Covid-19. But refused to disclose how the girl got the virus but tests are being carried out on children she has been in contact with.    The Ministry of Health of Castilla-La Mancha has also started tracking people who may have been in contact with her family in recent days.   According to reports, the girl is being isolated at home and has not needed hospital treatment while the relatives in her household have not shown symptoms but are awaiting their test results.     S...

Three- storey building collapses in Ebonyi

A three-storey building which is still under construction at Nkaliki Road opposite the Abakaliki Local Government Council Headquarters, has collapsed.    Some government officials which includes the Secretary to the State Government Kenneth Ugbala; Commissioner for Internal Security, Stanley Okoro Emegha; Special Assistant to the Governor on Capital Territory, Chinyelu Udoku and Chairman of Abakaliki Capital Territory Development Board (ACTDB) Dr Uche Onwe have visited the site.    While Ugbala directed the immediate sealing of the site and demolition of the building, Emegha ordered the arrest of the site engineer. Udoku asked the ACTDB to produce the staff that approved the building and all those in charge of monitoring the construction.   Onwe on the other hand said investigations revealed that sub-standard materials were used for the building which also had lots of structural defects. President Buhari departs for Mali tomorrow July 23

President Buhari will on Thursday, July 23, depart for Bamako, Republic of Mali on a one-day visit, following the briefing by the ECOWAS Special Envoy to the country, former President Goodluck Jonathan.   According to a statement released by presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, President Buhari and some ECOWAS leaders led by the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the sub-regional organization, President Issoufou Mahamadou of Niger Republic, agreed to meet in Mali to engage in further consultations towards finding a political solution to the crisis in the country.   Malian President, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and Presidents Machy Sall of Senegal, Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana and Alassane Ouattara of Cote d'Ivoire are expected to participate in the Bamako meeting.   Former President Jonathan was at the State House in the company of President of ECOWAS Commission, Mr Jean-Claude Kassi Brou, on Tuesday, July 21 to brief President Buhari on the unf...

Actress Queen Sylvanus has asked how men can take their girlfriends on a date using public transport because they do not have cars.   She wrote on Facebook: "Guys that take their girlfriends out with Keke and pepe..how do u do it ? Like how can u date without having ur own car?"     The question earned her insults as thousands of Facebook users commented on the post and accused her of broke-shaming. Schools, hotels and others to benefit from MSMEs support scheme – Osinbajo

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday July 16, disclosed that private schools, hotels, road transport workers and many others, would benefit from the stimulus package the Federal Government has put in place for Micro Small and Medium Enterprises to cushion the effect of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.   In a statement released by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Laolu Akande, the Vice President said the support scheme had been covered by the government’s Economic Sustainability Plan and the survival fund would help provide payroll support to MSMEs with a minimum of 10 and maximum of 50 staff members.   Osinbajo said;    “I am glad to note that this year has been an exception despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. A Nigerian woman has recounted the abuse she suffered in the hands of her mother and she said she never wants to have kids because she doesn't want to treat them the way her mother treated her.   Ukwu Ose made this revelation while defending Chidera, the Nigerian boy who went viral when he was filmed  destroying his parents' home  after which he said his  family is dead to him .   Reacting, Ukwu Ose narrated her own experience growing up with her mother.   She said her mum once used a pestle to break her head. She added that she eventually ran away from home to escape abuse.   She said that when she ran away, she realized she didn't need her anti-depressants anymore. The atmosphere at her home had been the cause of her depression.   She further stated that her mother was abused by her own parents and she took it out on her kids. As a result, she is scared of having kids of her own to avoid taking out the abuse she suffered from her mother on them....
