This life is extremely brief, and every second we spend here is extremely valuable. On the 20th of February, 1953, a 15-year-old boy named Joseph Ligon joined his classmates at a party. They became inebriated and made a decision that would have long-term consequences for their lives.

Because they were intoxicated, they ended up robbing and stabbing a total of eight people that night. Two of the victims lost their lives, and the remaining victims were severely injured. The result of this was that Joseph Ligon was apprehended and brought to trial, where he pled guilty to the charges against him. Following his guilty plea, he was sentenced to mandatory life imprisonment, which he regrettably received. In February of 1953, he was sentenced to prison.

He was deprived of his entire childhood and spent the majority of his adult life behind bars. He had been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison, but something happened in 2017 that changed everything. After nearly seven decades in prison, he was eligible for parole, which meant he would be allowed to spend a period of time outside the prison before returning. However, Joe Ligon chose not to accept the parole offer because he believes that, even if he is released from prison, he will never want to see the inside of a prison again, making it better for him to remain in prison rather than leave and return later.

He claimed that he had spent far too many years in prison and that he would rather be released for a period of time and then returned or be supervised for the rest of his life. As a result, he declined the offer. After 68 years in prison and believing that he would die in prison after being sentenced to life imprisonment, Joseph Ligon received a miraculous intervention from God in the form of a new life in the prison. After his attorney won the case in 2020, he refused to give up on the Joseph Ligon case and continued to fight until the end.
Joseph Ligon will be released from prison in 2021. (this year) After he was released, he expressed his desire for others to benefit from his experience, stating that he now feels like a foreigner in this world because everything has changed for him. He has been in prison since the twentieth century and was released in the twenty-first century; a great deal has changed, and he will have to learn how to survive all over again.

Joseph Ligon is currently 84 years old and is the longest-serving prisoner in the United States of America.

What I have taken away from this story is that we should be aware of our limits and avoid doing things in excess that could put us in danger.
